How Often Should You Deep Clean Your Home?

How Often Should You Deep Clean Your Home?

Margaret Hollis · 12 Jun 2026

Most of us hoover, wipe the surfaces and put things away without giving it much thought. That kind of upkeep is essential, but it only scratches the surface. A deep clean tackles the areas that routine tidying misses — behind appliances, inside cupboards, grout lines, skirting boards, window frames and all the spots that quietly gather grease and grime over months.

The honest answer to how often you should deep clean your home is: it depends. The size of your property, how many people live there, whether you have pets, and even where you live in the country all make a difference. Here in Norfolk and Suffolk, for example, coastal properties face extra challenges from salt air and damp that can accelerate the build-up of mould and residue.

That said, there are some sensible guidelines we follow when advising our customers.

A Rough Guide by Room and Area

Rather than thinking about the whole house at once, it helps to break things down room by room. Some areas need attention more frequently than others.

Kitchen

The kitchen is the hardest-working room in most homes. Grease builds up on extractor fans, hobs and the tops of cabinets. Inside the oven, residue bakes on with every use. We generally recommend a thorough kitchen deep clean every three to four months for a busy family household, or every six months if the kitchen sees lighter use.

Bathrooms

Limescale, soap scum and mildew accumulate quickly in bathrooms, especially in older properties where ventilation is limited. A deep clean of tiled surfaces, behind the toilet, inside the shower tray and around sealant should happen every two to three months.

Bedrooms and Living Areas

These rooms collect dust, allergens and general build-up at a slower rate. Twice a year is a reasonable target for a thorough deep clean — moving furniture, cleaning inside wardrobes and washing soft furnishings where possible. Many of our customers tie this in with seasonal changes, giving the home a proper going-over in spring and again in autumn.

Hallways and Utility Spaces

Hallways take a battering from foot traffic and are often overlooked. Utility rooms and under-stair cupboards can become dumping grounds. We recommend including these in at least one of your annual deep cleans.

When Life Gets in the Way

Even with the best intentions, most people fall behind. Work, family commitments and the sheer scale of a proper deep clean mean it often drops down the list. That is completely normal, and it is one of the main reasons people call us.

There are also specific moments when a deep clean makes obvious sense regardless of your usual schedule.

  • Moving into a new home — Even a recently sold property may not have been cleaned to the standard you would want. A thorough clean before you unpack means you are starting fresh.
  • After building or renovation work — Plaster dust, paint residue and debris get into everything. Post-renovation cleaning is a job in itself.
  • End of tenancy — If you are a tenant moving out or a landlord preparing a property for new occupants, a professional clean is usually expected and often required. Our end of tenancy cleaning service is built around exactly this situation.
  • After illness or a long period away — Dust, stale air and neglected surfaces benefit from a reset.
  • Before or after hosting — A big family gathering or a long-term house guest is a natural prompt for a deep clean.

If you are not sure where to start or simply do not have the time, our one-off cleaning service is a straightforward way to get the job done without committing to a regular schedule.

Signs Your Home Needs a Deep Clean Now

Sometimes the calendar is less useful than just looking around. A few reliable signs that it is time to book a proper clean include:

  1. Grout lines that have darkened or discoloured
  2. A smell in the kitchen that does not shift after wiping down surfaces
  3. Visible mould around window frames or bathroom sealant
  4. Dust visible on skirting boards, light fittings or tops of door frames
  5. The oven produces smoke or a smell when you turn it on
  6. You notice streaks or residue on windows even after a quick wipe

If several of these apply, a deep clean rather than a top-up tidy is what the home needs.

Making Deep Cleaning More Manageable

One approach that works well for many households is spreading the deep clean across the year rather than trying to do everything at once. Tackle the kitchen thoroughly in January, the bathrooms in spring, the bedrooms and living areas in summer, and use autumn to reset the whole house before the colder months arrive. This stops the task from feeling overwhelming and means no area goes too long without proper attention.

If you do want to prepare for a professional clean, a quick declutter beforehand makes a real difference. Clearing surfaces and floors means our cleaners can spend their time on the actual cleaning rather than moving items around.

We cover a wide range of properties across the region. If you are based in Norfolk, you can find out more about our deep cleaning service in Norfolk, or if you are in Suffolk, take a look at our deep cleaning service in Suffolk. We are happy to talk through what your home needs before we start.
