Getting Your Home Back in Order After a Party or Event

Margaret Hollis · 29 Jun 2026

The morning after a party often brings the same feeling: a house that looks like a small storm passed through it. Glasses on every surface, crumbs trodden into rugs, a faint smell of spilled wine, and a kitchen that somehow got worse as the evening went on. We know the feeling well, because our team is regularly called in to help homeowners across Norfolk and Suffolk get their homes back to normal after a celebration.

This guide walks through the practical steps involved in post-event cleaning, from what to tackle first to when it makes sense to bring in some extra help.

Start With the Obvious, Then Work Deeper

The instinct after a party is to grab a bin bag and start sweeping everything into it. That is a reasonable first step, but rushing straight to wiping down surfaces without a clear order often means going over the same areas twice.

We recommend working room by room and top to bottom. Dust, crumbs and debris fall downward, so clearing surfaces before you vacuum or mop saves effort. Here is a reliable order to follow:

  1. Collect all glasses, plates and cutlery and move them to the kitchen. Do not wash them yet — just gather them.
  2. Remove rubbish from each room, including napkins, bottles, food packaging and anything disposable.
  3. Wipe down surfaces including tables, worktops, windowsills and light switches. Sticky fingerprints on light switches are easy to miss.
  4. Deal with upholstery before vacuuming the floor. Remove any cushion covers that need washing, blot any spills, and brush off crumbs.
  5. Vacuum all floors, including under furniture where crumbs tend to gather.
  6. Mop hard floors last, especially kitchen and hallway tiles which usually take the most punishment.

Treating Stains Before They Set

Stains are the biggest risk after any gathering. Red wine, food, lipstick and grease all become significantly harder to remove once they have dried. If you notice a stain the morning after, the faster you act the better the result.

Fabric and carpet stains

Blot rather than rub. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper into fibres and spreads it outward. Work from the outside of the stain inward, using a clean white cloth. For most food and drink stains, cold water and a small amount of washing-up liquid is a sensible starting point. Avoid hot water on protein-based stains like egg or dairy, as heat causes them to bond with the fabric.

For red wine on carpet, once you have blotted up as much liquid as possible, a solution of one tablespoon of washing-up liquid and one tablespoon of white wine vinegar in two cups of cold water works well. Apply it gently and blot again.

Hard surface stains

Rings from glasses on wooden furniture are common after parties. A paste of equal parts white toothpaste and bicarbonate of soda, rubbed gently in the direction of the grain and then wiped clean, can lift many white ring marks. Always test on a hidden area first.

Grease splashes around the hob and kitchen worktops respond well to a degreasing spray left to dwell for a few minutes before wiping. Do not rush this step — the dwell time does the work for you.

The Kitchen After Catering for a Crowd

The kitchen usually takes the hardest hit. After cooking for a large number of people, there is often a build-up of grease on the hob, splashes inside the microwave, a sticky residue on worktops and a fridge that needs reorganising.

Our team always treats the kitchen as a priority in any post-event clean because grease and food residue left too long can start to smell and attract insects. Key areas to focus on:

  • Hob and extractor fan — grease accumulates quickly under the extractor fan filters, which are usually removable and can be soaked in hot soapy water.
  • Oven — if food was spilled inside during cooking, this is worth addressing before it bakes on further. An oven cleaning spray left overnight can make the job considerably easier the following morning.
  • Bin and surrounding area — replace the bin bag and wipe down the inside and outside of the bin itself.
  • Fridge — remove any leftover food that will not keep, wipe down shelves, and check for anything that has spilled.

Bathrooms Used by Guests

A bathroom that has been used by multiple guests throughout the evening needs more than a quick spray and wipe. Toilet seats, flush handles, taps and door handles are all high-contact surfaces and should be cleaned with an appropriate disinfectant. The floor around the toilet and the sink basin are also worth giving proper attention.

If you have a downstairs cloakroom that took the brunt of guest use, it is worth replacing the hand towel and checking that the mirror and any glass shelving are free from splashes and fingerprints.

When a One-Off Clean Makes More Sense

For a small gathering, tackling the cleaning yourself is perfectly manageable with enough time and the right approach. But after a larger party, a significant occasion or an event that left the house genuinely out of sorts, bringing in professional help is often the most practical decision.

Our one-off cleaning service is designed exactly for situations like this. There is no need to commit to a regular schedule — we come in, bring the house back to its best, and leave. If the event has left the property in need of something more intensive, our deep cleaning service covers areas that a standard clean does not reach, including behind appliances, inside ovens, inside fridges and thorough limescale removal in bathrooms.

We cover a wide area across the region. If you are based locally and want to know whether we work in your area, our locations page has full details of where our team operates.

A Few Things Worth Doing Before You Call Us

If you are planning to book a post-event clean with our team, there are a few simple things you can do beforehand that help us make the most of our time with you.

  • Remove as much rubbish and clutter as possible before we arrive. The less time spent bagging up bottles and clearing surfaces, the more thoroughly we can clean.
  • Point out any stains or specific problem areas when you book or when we arrive. This helps us prioritise and bring the right products.
  • If you have any preferred cleaning products you would like us to use, or areas you would like us to avoid, just let us know.

Our team works across Norfolk and Suffolk, and we are used to homes of all sizes, from small terraces to larger period properties that have hosted significant gatherings. If you have questions before booking, our frequently asked questions page covers the things most people want to know.

The morning after does not have to be a long, exhausting ordeal. With a clear order of work and the right approach to stains and surfaces, most homes can be back to normal within a few hours. And if it all feels like too much, our team is ready to help.
