How to Prepare Your Home Before the Cleaner Arrives

Beverley Holloway · 24 Sep 2026

Having a professional cleaner come to your home is one of the best ways to keep on top of things, whether you have booked a regular cleaning visit or a one-off freshen-up. But there is a small amount of preparation that can help our team work more efficiently and get far better results for you.

Think of it this way: the more time our cleaners spend navigating clutter or hunting for surfaces beneath piles of post, the less time they have to tackle the areas that really need attention. A few minutes of preparation on your part means you get the most out of every visit.

Clear the Clutter Before We Arrive

Our cleaners are there to clean, not to tidy. Tidying and cleaning are two very different tasks, and confusing the two is one of the most common reasons people feel a clean has not gone as well as expected.

Before your appointment, take a few minutes to do the following:

  • Pick up clothing from floors and put it in a laundry basket or wardrobe
  • Clear worktops in the kitchen of loose items, paperwork, and small appliances you are not using
  • Move personal items such as jewellery, medication, and valuables somewhere safe
  • Put children's toys into a box or toy bin so floors are accessible
  • Clear bathroom surfaces of everyday toiletries where possible

You do not need to make your home spotless before we arrive. The idea is simply to give our team clear access to the surfaces and floors they need to clean properly.

Think About Access and Priorities

If there are areas of your home you particularly want us to focus on, it helps to have that in mind before we arrive. Let us know at the start of the visit if there are rooms you want us to prioritise, or if there is anything you would prefer us to leave alone.

It is also worth thinking about practical access:

  • Make sure rooms are unlocked and accessible
  • If pets are in the home, let us know in advance so we can be mindful around them
  • Put out any cleaning products you prefer us to use, or let us know if you have preferences around fragrances or ingredients
  • If you have a dishwasher, emptying it beforehand means we can clear the sink area more effectively

Small details like these help the visit run smoothly from the moment we arrive.

Preparing Different Rooms

Kitchen

The kitchen often takes the longest to clean properly, particularly around the hob, oven exterior, and sink. Clearing away washing up and wiping down any major spills before we arrive means our team can focus on the deep clean rather than surface-level tidying. If you have a pile of dishes, putting them in the dishwasher or giving them a quick rinse first is genuinely helpful.

Bathrooms

Removing personal care products from around the bath and shower makes it much easier to clean tiles and surfaces properly. You do not need to remove everything, but clearing the shower tray of bottles and the vanity unit of loose items means nothing gets missed.

Bedrooms

Making the bed before we arrive is not something you need to do, but stripping it if you want fresh bedding put on is useful if that is part of your service. Most importantly, clear the floor so we can vacuum properly around and under furniture.

Living Areas

Returning cushions to sofas, picking up any items from the floor, and clearing the coffee table are all small things that make a noticeable difference to how thoroughly we can dust and vacuum.

Helping Us Help You Between Visits

If you are on a regular cleaning schedule, the work you do between visits makes each clean more effective. Wiping down kitchen surfaces after cooking, giving the bathroom a quick rinse after use, and dealing with spills promptly all mean that when our team arrives, they can focus on proper cleaning rather than catching up.

If you are not yet on a regular schedule and you are considering setting one up, our regular home cleaning service is available across Norfolk and Suffolk. It is a great way to stay on top of things without the effort falling entirely on you.

If you have questions about what is included in your clean or what to expect from your first visit, our frequently asked questions page covers many of the things people ask us most often.

A Few Final Tips

  • Make sure there is somewhere for us to park if you live in a busy area
  • Let us know if you are going to be in or out during the clean so we can plan accordingly
  • If you have specific products you would like us to avoid due to allergies or sensitivities, tell us ahead of time
  • Leave a note if there are any areas you want us to pay extra attention to

Preparing your home before a clean does not need to take long. A few minutes of thought and a bit of light tidying can make a real difference to what our team is able to achieve during the visit. The cleaner your home is between appointments and the easier the access, the better the results you will see every time.
