How to Tackle Post-Event Cleaning at Home

Hosting an event at home is brilliant until the last guest leaves and you look around at the aftermath. Empty glasses, sticky surfaces, squashed food on the carpet, and a kitchen that looks like it's been through a war. We see this regularly across Norfolk and Suffolk, and the good news is that with the right approach, you can get your home back in order without too much misery.
Whether you've had a handful of people over for a dinner party or a full house for a milestone birthday, post-event cleaning follows the same basic principles. Let's walk through what works.
Start With a Clear-Up Before You Clean
There's little point reaching for the mop while plates are still on every surface. The first step is always a straightforward tidy. Collect glasses, crockery, and cutlery and get them soaking or into the dishwasher. Bag up rubbish and recycling separately. Remove any decorations that are done for the night.
This is also the moment to open windows. Post-party homes tend to hold onto smells from food, candles, and general foot traffic. A good airing while you tidy makes the cleaning stage feel much fresher.
Work From Top to Bottom
Once the clutter is cleared, work from high to low. Dust any surfaces where people may have brushed past, wipe down shelves and windowsills, then move to tables and countertops. Floors should always be last. If you start with the floor and then wipe down a surface, you're just creating more work for yourself.
Pay Attention to Soft Furnishings
Sofas, cushions, and rugs take a lot of punishment during a gathering. Check for spills and treat them promptly. For most fabric sofas, a clean damp cloth with a small amount of washing-up liquid works well for fresh stains. Blot, don't rub. Rubbing pushes the stain further into the fibres and makes it harder to lift later.
For carpets, the same rule applies. Treat spills as soon as you spot them if you can, but if they've dried overnight, dampening the area first before working on it gently gives you a better chance of a good result.
The Kitchen Deserves Proper Attention
The kitchen almost always takes the biggest hit. Greasy hobs, splattered walls behind the cooker, sticky floor around the bin, and a fridge that's been opened and closed dozens of times. It's worth setting aside time specifically for this room rather than rushing through it.
Degrease the hob and splashback with a dedicated kitchen cleaner or a diluted washing-up liquid solution. Wipe out the inside of the microwave if it was used. Clean the sink and taps, including around the base of the taps where grime builds up quickly. Mop the floor last, working backwards toward the door so you're not walking over what you've just cleaned.
Don't Forget High-Touch Areas
Light switches, door handles, and bannisters get touched constantly during a party. These areas are easy to miss but worth a quick wipe with a general-purpose cleaner before you call it done.

A Few Tips to Make Next Time Easier
- Lay down extra mats near the front door and kitchen threshold before guests arrive. They catch a lot of debris and are easy to shake out afterwards.
- Use tablecloths on surfaces you're worried about. They protect the surface and go straight into the wash.
- Keep a roll of kitchen roll and a spray bottle handy during the event so you can deal with spills immediately rather than leaving them to set.
- Put out a dedicated bin bag or caddy in the kitchen and main living space so people have somewhere obvious to put rubbish as the evening goes on.
- Do a quick tidy the night of the event rather than leaving everything until the morning. You don't need to clean everything, but collecting glasses and putting food away means you're not starting from scratch the next day.
