Keeping Your Home Fresh Through the Summer Months
Beverley Holloway · 7 Aug 2026
Summer in Norfolk and Suffolk is a wonderful time of year. The coast is busy, the countryside is at its best, and most of us are spending far more time at home and outdoors. But with all that extra activity comes more cleaning. Open windows let in pollen and dust. Garden shoes trail mud through hallways. BBQ smells linger in soft furnishings. Children and pets move freely between inside and outside, and guests arrive more frequently.
Keeping on top of things during the warmer months does not have to be a chore in itself. With a few simple habits and some focused attention on the right areas, your home can stay fresh and comfortable all summer long. Our team has put together this room-by-room and routine-based guide to help you do exactly that.
Summer cleaning routines that actually work
The key to a clean home in summer is consistency rather than big occasional efforts. A little attention each day or each week makes a much bigger difference than a single deep scrub every month. That is especially true during the summer, when heat and humidity can cause smells, mould and grime to develop more quickly than in cooler months.
Daily habits that make a difference
- Wipe down kitchen surfaces every evening — summer heat speeds up bacterial growth on worktops, especially after cooking.
- Shake out doormats daily — pollen, dust and dry soil accumulate quickly during dry spells.
- Ventilate bathrooms thoroughly — humidity rises in summer and mould can take hold surprisingly fast.
- Put away garden equipment and footwear — a dedicated area near the back door reduces the amount of dirt tracked through the house.
Weekly tasks for the warmer season
- Vacuum soft furnishings and upholstery, particularly if you have pets or keep windows open regularly.
- Mop hard floors with a lightly diluted floor cleaner suited to your surface type.
- Clean the inside of the fridge — warm weather means food spoils faster and odours develop more easily.
- Wipe down window sills and ledges where pollen and dust settle.
- Empty and clean bins more frequently — smells and flies are a greater problem in warmer temperatures.
If you prefer to hand regular cleaning over to a professional team, our regular cleaning service covers all of these tasks on a weekly or fortnightly basis, leaving you free to enjoy the season.
Room-by-room summer cleaning tips
Kitchen
The kitchen needs more attention in summer than at any other time of year. Heat and humidity are the enemy here. Keep surfaces as clear as possible, as clutter creates more areas for grease and moisture to collect. Wipe the hob after every use, and give the extractor fan filter a proper clean once a month — it works harder during barbecue season when you are cooking more frequently.
Pay attention to the area behind and underneath your appliances. Crumbs and spills that go unnoticed during the week can attract unwanted attention in warm weather. A quick pull-out and wipe-down of the fridge and cooker every few weeks is good practice through the summer.
Bathrooms
East Anglian summers can be humid, and bathrooms bear the brunt of that. Grout, sealant and shower curtains are particularly prone to mildew when ventilation is poor. Open windows or run the extractor fan for at least 20 minutes after every shower or bath. Clean the shower tray and tiles weekly using a bathroom spray that tackles soap scum and mildew.
If you do notice early signs of surface mould on grout or around the bath sealant, address it quickly with a dedicated mould remover rather than leaving it to spread. Our guide on managing damp and mould in the home has more advice on staying on top of this.
Living areas
With windows open more often, living rooms and hallways collect more dust and pollen than usual. If anyone in your household suffers from hay fever or allergies, regular dusting and vacuuming is particularly important. Use a damp microfibre cloth on hard surfaces rather than a dry duster, which simply moves dust into the air rather than removing it.
Soft furnishings — cushions, throws, sofa covers — should be washed or aired outdoors regularly. Summer is a great time to hang them outside on a dry day, which freshens them naturally.
Bedrooms
Summer means warmer nights and more perspiration, which means bedding needs washing more frequently. Wash sheets and pillowcases every week if possible, and turn your mattress every couple of months. Keep the bedroom well ventilated but close windows on high pollen days if anyone in the household is sensitive.
Wardrobe changes are common in summer as lighter clothing comes out. This is a good opportunity to vacuum and wipe out the inside of wardrobes and drawers, which often harbour dust throughout the year.
Managing pollen and dust in East Anglian homes
Norfolk and Suffolk are largely rural counties with a great deal of arable farmland, open coastline and parkland. Pollen counts here can be notably high during late spring and throughout the summer. For households where this is a concern, a few small adjustments to your cleaning routine can make a real difference.
- Vacuum at least twice a week using a vacuum with a HEPA filter if possible.
- Wipe down hard floors with a damp mop rather than sweeping, which disturbs settled pollen.
- Change bedding more frequently during high pollen periods.
- Keep soft toys and decorative fabrics to a minimum in bedrooms where allergy sufferers sleep.
- Rinse cloths and mop heads thoroughly after use, as pollen transfers easily between rooms.
